Frequently Asked Questions
About The Jewelry:
What metal is your jewelry made of?
I have five different metals I typically use. (The metal type is always listed in the description of each product.)
Stainless Steel: My stainless steel jewelry is solid stainless steel, which is a silver color, but it is not as bright of a silver as my silver plated and silver filled jewelry. Stainless steel jewelry is very durable and you can get stainless steel wet without risking your jewelry tarnishing. It should be noted, however, that stainless steel can be damaged by certain chemicals in water, meaning it is not the best idea to wear stainless steel jewelry in a chlorinated pool or in the beach’s salty water. Wearing stainless steel jewelry while washing your hands or taking a shower is completely fine.
Silver Plated: Silver plated means that the jewelry has a silver layer on top of another metal (copper in this case). If jewelry is not properly cared for or worn very frequently, this layer can wear off. If this layer wears off, the jewelry will still be wearable; it will just be a copper color instead of silver. Note that copper and silver can react with certain oils on your skin and turn your skin a dark color temporarily. Rest assured that this dark color will come off easily with water and you can clean it off your jewelry. I can remake most of my pieces in a different metal type if you do not like silver plated jewelry! Please reach out to anissa.firefly.song@gmail.com to inquire about remaking a piece in a different metal
Silver Filled: Silver filled means that the jewelry has a thick layer of silver over another metal. This layer is much thicker than that of silver plated jewelry, making silver filled jewelry a more durable option. Please note that silver can react with certain oils on your skin and stain your skin temporarily. This staining will come off with water and you can clean it off your jewelry.
Brass: Brass is a gold-colored alloy made from copper and zinc. Brass reacts the same way to oxygen and oils on your skin in the same way that copper does because it contains copper. Brass is prone to oxidization, meaning that it reacts with oxygen and forms a dark layer on the outside of the brass. This is NOT a defect. That is simply how brass behaves. This oxidization can be removed using a few different methods. RESEARCH how the stone in your jewelry will react to each method before attempting to remove oxidization. Some chemicals and mixtures may damage the stone. Brass can also react to the oils on your skin and stain your skin temporarily. This staining will come off your skin easily with water. Note: I use brass more often in custom orders than premade products.
Copper: My copper jewelry is made from solid copper wire. Copper is prone to oxidization, meaning that it reacts with oxygen and forms a dark layer on the outside of the copper. This is NOT a defect. That is simply how copper behaves. This oxidization can be removed using a few different methods. RESEARCH how the stone in your jewelry will react to each method before attempting to remove oxidization. Some chemicals and mixtures may damage the stone. Copper can also react to the oils on your skin and stain your skin temporarily. This staining will come off your skin easily with water. Is your jewelry nickel free?
All silver plated, silver filled, brass, and copper jewelry in my shop is nickel free! My stainless steel jewelry is hypoallergenic, so it is safe for people with nickel allergies despite having trace amounts of nickel (read more below):
According to nickelsafe.co.uk :
“Steel is an alloy that contains around 11% chromium by mass, and is corrosion resistant. Both surgical and stainless steel contain nickel, but bound so that it releases no nickel ions onto the skin, and is hypoallergenic rather than nickel free. Therefore it is safe for nickel-sensitive wearers. Surgical steel is used the manufacture of surgical instruments and by all reputable piercing studios for jewellery.”
How long are the necklace chains?
Necklace chains are typically 18 inches long, but if you would like a different length, reach out to anissa.firefly.song@gmail.com
Does your jewelry tarnish?
Copper, brass, silver jewelry will all eventually tarnish (even .940 silver), so yes. To remove tarnish, rub jewelry with a microfiber cloth. Stainless steel jewelry is much more resistant to tarnish.
How should I care for my jewelry?
Avoid getting silver plated, silver filled, brass, and copper jewelry wet unless cleaning it. Take off jewelry in humid environments like the sauna. Remove tarnish with a microfiber cloth. Take off jewelry when doing intense physical activity as excessive sweat can make jewelry dirty. Take off jewelry when sleeping.
Stainless steel jewelry can get wet without damage, but it can react with chlorine in pools and salt in ocean water. If you decide to wear stainless steel jewelry in the pool or to the beach, be sure to clean it afterward to minimize potential damage. Washing your hands or taking a shower with stainless steel jewelry is generally okay!
How should I clean my jewelry?
If jewelry is tarnished, rubbing it with a microfiber cloth will work. Otherwise, I recommend using dawn dish soap and warm water. Note: use GENTLE cloths or brushes to avoid scratching jewelry.
Is your jewelry handmade?
My jewelry is handmade by me! While I do not carve and polish the stones and the beads, I do all of the wire wrapping and wire weaving. I make some of my chains completely by hand out of wire, but most chains are assembled by me (through cutting chain lengths, adding jump rings, adding clasps, and finishing it off with a bead—usually a freshwater pearl—on the end).
